All children and young people placed at Storyybrook school will have some form of social, emotional and mental health barriers to learning. Pupils must have an Education, Health & Care Plan or have a statutory EHC needs assessment approaching its conclusion or agreement from the LEA to place the child at Storyybrook school.
Referrals for admission must come from a Local Authority and follow statutory SEND formal consultation process. Parents/Carers and others are not able to directly commission placements. Please contact your LEA caseworker to be referred.
At Storyybrook School, what sets us apart is our belief that strong, trusting relationships are the foundation of effective learning. We focus on building these connections with each student, ensuring they feel understood, valued, and supported. Our approach centres around personal development, helping children re-engage, feel inspired, and gain confidence in their abilities.
We implement a staggered approach to academic engagement, ensuring that students first feel safe and ready to learn. With high levels of support, we foster high levels of engagement, empowering each child to thrive in our ambitious curriculum.
At Storyybrook, we offer a broad curriculum aligned with the national curriculum, but with the flexibility to adapt to each student’s individual needs. Thanks to our high staff-to-student ratio, we bring learning to life through hands-on, engaging activities rather than traditional, lecture-based teaching. Each student’s interests, strengths, and readiness are carefully considered when designing personalised timetables, ensuring they feel motivated and supported. We place a strong emphasis on developing reading and mathematical skills to prepare students for their next steps in education and life, giving them the tools they need to succeed.
With an experienced and talented student support team, and access to a range of therapists and support services, including Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Counselling, we ensure that our students receive all the support they need to overcome any barriers to learning they may have.
At Storyybrook, we understand that all behaviour is a form of communication. As a trauma-informed school, we recognise that challenging behaviour often stems from underlying emotional or mental health needs. Our staff are trained to respond calmly and supportively, ensuring students feel understood and safe, even in difficult moments. Rather than focusing on punishment, we use positive reinforcement and restorative practices to help students reflect on their actions, regulate their emotions, and develop healthier ways of coping. This approach fosters trust and encourages lasting behavioural change.
